Dolls House Series at Open Studios Stroud 2014

This work was inspired by the family dolls house c 1948 built by a craftsman for his young grandchild Mary.
Can we all play? I had limited space to show work so I converted the dolls house into a gallery and made room sized artist books.
And Hereby Hangs a Tale.
This piece was developed from the idea that family stories build over time with unreliable memory and colourful re-telling. This book collects the recollections of a family, a study of memory, truth and fiction.Rita, Peter, Kate, Richard and Alasdair told the story they remembered separately and here they are compiled and presented by Rita Fenning April 2014.
Richard and Kate wrote extra pieces. I made them into artist books.
I worked with Maria Butunoi http://mariabutunoi.com/ to produce 5 new poems and a set of new artist books. Maria is a local published poet and freelance journalist and she is exploring in her writing the concept of identity and the influences of history, politics, oppression and family into the way people develop, feel and think about themselves. Her preoccupation with memory and childhood are at the centre of this project. Maria invites the public to reflect on personal stories, which make us unique. A serious and inspirational discourse into the darkness of the past and the beauty of the future.
